National Mission on Himalayan Studies

Implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC)
Nodal and Serving hub with G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development

Credentials of the Project: IERP/NMHS/10

Project ID: IERP/NMHS/10
Title: Vulnerability of disturbances, resource mapping & ex-situ conservation of endemic & relict species Betula utilis D.Don (Himalayan birch) in Sindh forest division of Kashmir.
Batch/ Financial Year: 2015-16
Total Grant: Rs. 12,81,500 (Twelve lakh eighty one thousand five hundred only)

Project Objectives Quantifiable Deliverables
To study tree line structure and diversity of Betula utilis dominated stands and document it through resource mapping along an altitudinal gradient in Sindh Forest Division. Determination of plant diversity and regeneration pattern of complex natural populations dominated by B. utilis to detect its role and importance in the local phytocoenoses.
To evaluate spatial patterns of seedling distribution and regeneration behavior of Betula utilis. Establishment of nursery at Faculty of Forestry, Benhama, Ganderbal to develop a reasonable propagation strategy for conservation of this species.
To determine soil Physico-chemical properties in the selected tree stands of Betula utilis. Suggest management strategies for in-situ conservation of this species in the selected forest division.
To study phenology and morphological events of Betula utilis along an altitudinal gradient. Generation of forest map to determine geospatial extent with respect to B. utilis in Sindh forest division.
To determine the best treatment for propagating Betula utilis through seeds. To provide plant material of Betula utilis (25000 seedlings - two year old) to Forest Department for out planting in its natural zone of occurrence.
Publishing of pamphlets/booklets for popularization of knowledge about this species among the forest managers and local people.
