Project Brief Description: Climate change is a leading threat to both ecosystem and communities located in the Himalayas. Recent past frequency of extreme events is increasing, particularly those relating to climate and hydrology, but it also carries the capacity to disrupt traditional socio-ecological systems resulting into occurrence of complex vulnerability in Himalayas. In this view, main aim of the project is to assess the nature, vulnerability and capacity of the communities to cope with complex disasters in the face of climate change - a case study of Sikkim. As many of such disasters and capacities are deeply ingrained in the existing nature of development, this project also aim to scrutinize and identify modes of development that suit local requirements for a sustainable future. The project falls in the Broad Thematic Groups (BTGs) Awareness & Capacity Building under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS). Awareness and outreach programs along with capacity building will be provided to 50 State officials, 500 population per village, 50 students per school to develop strategies for managing disaster faced by climate change in the region.
