Project Brief Description: | Banana is the fourth most important food crop, after rice, wheat and maize (Perrier et al., 2011). With worldwide production of more than 106 Tg y -1 (FAOSTAT, 2015). Bananas are known for its high nutritive values. The Musaceae (to which banana belongs) family has four genomes present, contributed by four wild Musa species, i.e., Musa acuminata (A-genome), Musa balbisiana (B-genome), Musa schizocarpa (S-genome) and Musa textillis (T-genome) (Manzo-S'nchez et al., 2015). The banana cultivars originate from M. acuminataand M. balbisiana, with the A- and B-genomes, respectively, as well as their hybrids and polyploids (Simmonds and Shepherd, 1955). North-East India including Nagaland is home to a large number of Musa species. The region is a micro centre of evolution of Musaspecies (Dey et al., 2014; Lamare et al., 2016). Worldwide, about 68 Musaspecies are reported (Lamare et al., 2016). To date, several wild Musaand Ensetespecies were reported from Nagaland; namely M. nagensium, M. nagalandiana, M. cheesmanii, M. itinerans, M. velutina, M. aurantiaca, M. sikkimensis, M. balbisiana, M. acuminata. M. flaviflora, M. thomsoni, M. ornataand Ensete glaucum(Prain, 1904; Dey et al., 2014); however no detailed and exhaustive survey, collection and documentation of wild Musa germplasm were carried out or attempted. For plant improvement programs, availability of desired gene sources are prerequisite. In banana, the wild diploid species are valuable genetic resources, harboring important traits such as resistance to various diseases, and the ability to thrive in relatively dry and cool environments (Udeet al., 2002; Uma et al., 2005). Indigenous genetic resources could be harnessed forthe generation of novel plants. Molecular studies is required to comprehensively assess the species genetic variability to aid conservation and management programme including utilization/bio-prospection of the vital plant genetic resources for value addition. Use of biotechnological tools including plant tissue culture, provides a suitable approach for the production of large planting materials from species with traits of interest. | |||
