Project Brief Description: Arunachal Pradesh is an important state of North East Himalaya as it is very rich in its biodiversity. Arunachal Pradesh is the largest state in geographical as well as in river drainage area in North Eastern India. The entire territory of Arunachal Pradesh forms a complex hill system with varying elevation, traversed throughout by a number of rivers and rivulets. The unique drainage system of the state falls under upper Brahmaputra river system constituted by ten major river basins. The Himalayan region holds variety of fish species of which most are cold-water hill stream fishes. The river system of Arunachal Pradesh is enriched with 213 species of fishes. Arunachal Pradesh is regarded as the type locality for 11 freshwater fish species in the world. The fish fauna of the riverine resources inhabit a combination of both torrential and plain water forms occupying diverse ecological regime in their distributional range. The ichthyofauna of the state is quite unique and precious due to the unique agroclimatic situation of the state. The rivers/streams of the state provide these fishes their unique microhabitat environment which is indispensable for their survival, growth and reproduction. But of late, due to many anthrpogenic factors these microhabitat environment is disturbed and destroyed, as a result of which unique and precious ichthyofauna of the state is facing a serious threat. Many fish species of the state are rapidly entering into the categories of Endangered, Threatened and Extinct due to these activities. But no clear cut and definite information on the conservation status of these fishes and environmental health of their microhabitat i.e. the rivers/streams of Arunachal Pradesh are available. One of the best way of conservation of indigenous fish fauna of natural aquatic ecosystems is promotion of aquaculture in areas proximity to the rivers to reduce fishing pressure on these natural resources and thereby providing the fisherfolk with alternative fish centric livelihood options. No conservation programme can be successful until and unless there is wholehearted participation and co-operation of the local people. To ascertain this, they should be made aware about the actual status and gravity of the problem through awareness campaigns, workshops etc. In addition to this, the most important aspect is providing these local people a healthy alternative livelihood option he/she can opt instead of going for fishing in rivers/ streams. Keeping all these aspects in view, through the proposed project an attempt will be made to address all the above mentioned issues. The conservation status of the indigenous ichthyofauna of the selected streams will be determined. The environmental health of the streams will be evaluated and the anthropogenic stress factors (if any) affecting the ichthyofauna will be identified and their mitigation measures will be suggested. To reduce fishing pressure on the rivers a few fish centric supplementary livelihood options will be promoted among the fisherfolks whose livelihood completely rely on these rivers.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: 1500 fisherfolks/villagers, National/State Biodiversity Board, Researchers, State Fisheries Department
