Project Brief Description: The proposition aims to address thefollowing critical issues related to the bamboo-sector in the region.
• Majority of the population involve in the handicrafts sector depends on bamboo-based enterprises for their livelihood
• EDII survey determined that in Agartala Bamboo Cluster (covering two districts) alone, more than 3500 household units are engaged in bamboo crafts-making, and employs more than 3000 women
• Climate changes have adversely affected bamboo production in the region
• Traditional skills in bamboo craftsmanship are getting lost; skill restoration is needed
• Lack of database about availability of biodiversity, raw materials, artisans, entrepreneurship, MSMEs, services providers is creating a bottleneck and aggravating existing issues
• Lack of collective platform and institutionalised delivery mechanism of services (technology, business, etc) is squeezing the potential of the sector and is decelerating growth
• Empowerment and participation in the labour force of women and backward classes remain unrecognised
• High exposure to economic shocks due to lack of income surety over any given time-period
• Lack of percolation and uptake of technological solutions and innovations in the sector due to the geographical remoteness of the bamboo clusters in the proposed region
• Lack of capacity building of local institutions to address the sector specific problems of the region
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

Direct beneficiaries

• 90% of the bamboo clusters in each of the three states – Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, will be approached and brought under the activities of the project
• Bamboo cluster stakeholders – artisans, unskilled and skilled workers, women, entrepreneurs
• Women entrepreneurs in the bamboo-based sector (production, trading, services)

Indirect beneficiaries

• Institutionalising the delivery mechanisms of the services (technology, marketing, finance, etc) will benefit other MSMEs in the region too; substitutes and complementary product groups – cane, fibre-based production and value chain, and others will also reap the benefits
• The project will address the value chain of bamboo – from agrotechnology components to the end consumption preferences. The value chain of bamboo, either as a whole or in parts will be positively affected
• Informal sector, especially the services providers will be linked to the value chain
