Project Brief Description: The ever-growing human population demands increased agricultural productivity if possible through methods that do not harm the natural environment. The genetic improvement of crop species is one answer to this problem. However, to successfully do so, a diverse array of genotypes would be needed. Since continued overuse and misuse of our natural resources together with intensive agriculture are causing tremendous amount of genetic erosion, it is imperative that crop genetic resources be conserved. Selection of superior genotypes, standardization of propagation technology and quality fodder have generated the interest among farming community. This is farmers friendly species on their farmland / cropland. A number of universities and institutions have taken up research for developing more productive genotypes in this species. Increasing popularity of species will result in introduction of large number of genotypes. Development of DUS specific characterization of beul germplasm will help in proper registration of these genotypes and protect plant breeder's rights. Planting material will be multiplied by obtaining cutting material from Clonal Seed Orchard (Vegetative Propagation) and accordingly nursery will be established to supply true to type genotypes for the farmers of the state as well as State Forest Department, Vegetative Multiplication Garden (VMG) will be developed at Main Campus, Nauni Solan (HP) as a source of identified planting material.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

Farmers of the State ( Low and Mid Hill Zones of Himachal Pradesh)/ NGO's State Forest Department /Stake holders etc.
- Production of genetically superior high yielding strain of Grewia optiva.
- Production of superior genotypes with high protein content
- Selection of best families and best genotypes of the best families
- Enhancement of productivity of crop land situation
- To mitigate the fuel and fodder requirements of the farmers of the state
- Enumerate of land through development of beul based agroforestry system
