Project Brief Description:

The goal of the project is livelihood opportunities creation through bioresource and biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture production and utilisation for rural inhabitants, especially women in the Kumaon and Garhwal Himalayas. The geographical focus of the proposed project is villages in the catchment of river Ramganga (west), one of the few rainfed rivers of the Himalayas and a tributary of river Ganga which is also the lifeline of the Corbet National Park and its reserves. The project area comprises 57 villages cutting across border districts Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli and Almora in Uttarakhand state. The specific objectives of the project focus on assessing the natural resource and human resource base of the area, identifying livelihood options and opportunities, piloting interventions to create field based bio resources production and utilisation models to strengthen farmer livelihoods and support transformation into agro-entrepreneurs with knowledge and skills required. Special focus of the project will be on women as they dominate agriculture work and also the demography of the area. The project is directly focused on 40 villages and work with farmer groups and rural communities. The learnings from this project for natural resource based, climate change resilient and adapted process and practices can be used to plan for livelihood creation and up gradation in other ecologically sensitive zones in the Himalayas with potentially rich, yet ecologically sensitive land and water resources and biological diversity, natural or cultivated/domesticated.
