Project Brief Description: | WOver the millennia, the ancestors of IHR communities, like their counterparts around the world, have adapted to environmental and other changes through cultural responsiveness and collective community creativity. What is new in the present era is that the pace of change outstrips many communities capacity to successfully adapt. Larger societal responses therefore are called to inform effective adaptive and ameliorative responses and building up of resilience. However, IHR as data deficient area and existing loss of traditional knowledge and limited awareness about the gravity of situation need to be countered with innovative and effective ways of knowledge documentation, creation, dissemination and, finally its use to foster the above objectives. Himalayan Knowledge Network (HKN) will counter silo-based approach and would lead to synergize knowledge of a pool of stakeholders, institutions and community best practices and scholars. There is an inevitable need to build a dynamic mountain knowledge partnership and networking among the above sectors and actors that sets the pace of customized conservation and development of IHR. In turn, we need to promote to problem/solution based research and capacity building of government/non-government institutions and practitioners. A better coordination and investment amongst all institutions using applied research will help improve evidence-based policies and practices. For effectiveness of HKN, it will need to develop local leadership in all 12 IHR state-specific chapters increasing ownership, sustenance of local knowledge and expertise and change focus towards Himalayan resources, issues and communities.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | The project beneficiaries would be the entire population of IHR and downstream masses, however, the direct beneficiaries will be people in pilot sites of identified aspirational districts in IHR. The state administrations and development sectors, faculties, scientists, policy-makers, planners, practitioners and media would be benefitted through knowledge that would be generated by consultative process. Greater benefits are expected for local socio-ecological capital that of Communities living here so that natural and cultural legacy is sustained while ensuring economic avenues of scale and sustenance.
