Project Brief Description: |
The impact of climate change on human populations and the natural systems that support life is going to be severe. An estimated global increase in temperature and a likely sea level rise, calls for an immediate action to prevent further damage. Our societies still need to prepare for drastic changes in ecosystems, agriculture and sea levels. Climate change threatens the world's poor on a massive scale. Billions of the most vulnerable will face water shortages. Changes to agricultural cycles will threaten food security across hilly region more severely and will further lead to large scale migration.
Our area of study lies in seismically active Himalaya where climate change, degrading ecosystem and depleting natural resources have resulted in heightened pressure on the region containing valued biodiversity.
Our national policies are community and environment centric as reflected in their various programs but more focused community-oriented approach in small regions would be of considerable benefit in such a fragile environment.
|
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: |
The project would directly benefit the entire population of the village cluster (8 villages) = 3927 (as per 2011 census)including 1901 SC and ST population in terms of increased employment opportunities and better standard of living.
Increased vegetation (agricultural produce, fruits, vegetables and trees) in all the villages belonging to the Patiya village cluster. Enhanced water capacity of the region. Increased forest cover thereby improving air quality.
Would provide internship to 10 undergraduate students during the project.
