Project Brief Description: The North Eastern region (NER) of India is one of the biodiversity hotspots. Nagaland is a small state in the NER with a rich and varied heritage of biodiversity as well as ethnic tribes. The state has a forest cover of 8.63 lakh hectares (Government of Nagaland, 2017). For sustainable forestry, non-wood minor forest products including mushrooms and underutilized edible plants may be harvested in the forest without felling of the trees. Sale of minor forest products can generate income, resulting in profitability and positive economic impact. There is immense scope for minor forest products particularly wild edible mushrooms based industry in the state. Development of mushroom spawns, skill development trainings, awareness campaigns, etc can leads to development of the industry. The rich mushroom diversity provides huge socio-economic potential for the state. Their nutritional and medicinal values can be further exploited. Not much work has been carried out on inventory of minor forest products in Nagaland especially on wild mushrooms. Recently, some works have been initiated (Ao et al., 2016b; Deb et al., 2019a; b). Due to climate change, unsustainable collection and loss of forest cover, the biodiversity is depleting. As such continuing research and experiences gain will lead to emerging of technologies that can respond to the dual challenges of exploiting forest resources to raising economic levels while ensuring sustainable forest use.
