Project Brief Description: Urban Transport component
Public bus transport is the lifeline of Uttarakhand's mobility. Reliance on diesel-run public buses which are often old and poorly maintained has caused high air pollution as seen from the rising levels of particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) and SO2 in the urban agglomerations in the state. This warrants urgent actions to curb vehicular emissions that will negatively impact the larger ecosystem in the Himalayan region. At a time when the Govt. of India has ambitious outlook towards EV and the administration of Uttarakhand has formulated a state EV policy, one should explore tapping the benefits of rolling out e-buses for public transport. However, shifting to e-buses has some major economic, technological and developmental challenges, that the study will be addressing.

Urban Residential Sector The design, construction and operation of residential buildings in a cold region vary considerably and have to resist heat loss and promote heat gain to enhance thermal comfort indoors while optimising energy use. An energy reduction of up to 70% can be achieved by integrating energy-efficient design and construction strategies for buildings in cold climate. Since the design, construction and operation of residential buildings in cold climate of India are largely unaddressed, this provides an opportunity to explore climate responsive and energy efficient design and construction strategies to avoid the long-term lock-in of inefficient, high energy consuming residential buildings while ensuring that the growth follows a low carbon development pathway supporting India's climate change commitments while maintaining its sustainable development requirements.
