Project Brief Description: Movement ecology recently emerged as an independent discipline that integrates movement and its effects on animal ecology. It specifically considers individual behavioral responses to environmental variation, while taking into account key life-history traits and evolutionary constraints. Thus, studying movement ecology of mammals in threatened ecosystems gives comprehensive insights on entire ecological processes governing species. In the contemporary era when human activity is the dominant influence on climate and the environment (termed as Anthropocene), much of the earth's surface has been currently modified for human activities leading to changing patterns of biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Thus, effects of anthropogenic footprint on biodiversity has to be estimated for proper management of threatened habitats in a landscape. With increasing human population, overuse of ecosystem services in the IHR is causing habitat fragmentation and loss. These habitats are critical for survival of montane mammals which are exclusively dependent on them. Understanding impacts of future climate change on species distribution will help in formulation of conservation policies to reduce the risks of future biodiversity losses. In the IHR where ecological survey using conventional methods have their limitations and doubts, radiotelemetry is a convincing method to get intensive and comprehensive information about m ammalian species with accuracy.
