Project Brief Description: One of the main objectives of National Mission on Himalayan Studies is to launch and support innovative studies and related knowledge interventions towards the sustenance and enhancement of the ecological, natural, cultural, and socio-economic capital assets and values of the Internal Himalayan Region. Under this project, our motive is to uplift the economy and sustainability of farming and woman folk of Kashmir and Ladakh Himalayan regions and in this regard Integrated Farming System models will be established in the representative areas which will fetch the attention of other farmers and will adopt this practice for enhancement of ecology and socio-economic conditions. Each eco situation differs from others in respect of profitability of different crops and enterprises. And it will have one or two major crops/enterprises which need to be taken as base for any IFS model. Thus, there will be a different crop/enterprise based models of IFS like Rice based, Potato based, Rajmash based, Buck wheat based, Dairy based, Poultry based, etc. Within an Agro ecological situation, sizes of farm holdings, availability of farm family members/labourers, etc. needs to be considered before planning an IFS system. Hence, there is a need to develop and popularize Integrated Farming System at hilly and transitional zone of this part of Himalaya under NMHS Programme to cater the needs of farmers of this region to produce quality crops and helps in increasing the potential of export market and even reduces the cost of production of the crops. The nature of work in the Interior Himalayan Region is very relevant to NMHS and the upliftment of farmers socio-economic conditions should be on national priority, therefore need of the hour is to take necessary and concrete measures in a positive direction to upgrade the farming system of this region.
