Project Brief Description: The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) stands at a critical juncture, grappling with extensive environmental and economic dilemmas. The Eco-Smart Village model has emerged as a beacon of transformation in this context. This model is conceptualized as small-scale communities that exert a minimal ecological footprint. Such an approach is especially pertinent for the border districts of the IHR, characterized by their sparse population, limited livelihood options, inadequate connectivity, and deficits in food security, electricity, telecommunication facilities, and civic infrastructure. The proposed Eco-Smart Village paradigm pivots on three crucial pillars: Tourism, Waste Management, and Construction. These pillars are interconnected; tourism, as a predominant livelihood source, gives rise to waste management challenges and unregulated, resource-intensive construction activities, cumulatively impacting the region's ecology. The objective of the proposed is to build the resilience of communities in the select border districts by ensuring sustainable livelihood opportunities, thereby boosting the rural economy and reducing migration. This is based on addressing distinct components and strategies elucidated below, drawing upon the organisation's proven expertise in leading ecotourism initiatives and integrating sustainable, disaster-robust construction techniques, particularly in regions like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

• Youths: equip local youth with the necessary knowledge and skills to help boost the rural economy
• Women: Creation of women specific skills and livelihoods
• School and college students, teachers, and professors: engaging the academic stakeholders in mapping and monitoring of waste hotspot.
