Him-NILC Brief Description:

Thrust Area: Building capacitiesof various stakeholders on nature conservation through a holistic and coordinated effort tocreate an enabled environment for nature based learning and sustainable developmentalaction. The NLC is aimed at dissemination awareness and knowledge products and imparting training for building capacities of the frontline field staff of Forests and Wildlife departments and other stakeholders and educated youth of the fringe communities in and around the PAs for wildlife and biodiversity conservation and promotion of new nature based enhanced sustainable livelihood models of ecotourism, cultural tourism, nature and wildlife guiding for the local communities in the fragile Western Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir. The proposed programmes envisages development of training, interactive models, demonstration and dissemination material on Himalayan bio-resource conservation for livelihood enhancement and sustainable development under both in situ and ex situ conditions. The NLC also envisages development of a state of art forensic and genomics laboratory for forensic investigations to combat illegal trade and wildlife crime in the region and capacity building and awareness and extension-cum- livelihood promotion and entrepreneurship development programmes through development of Interpretation centre/ecotourism Park and conducting of workshops, capacity building trainings and field visits, nature trails and nature camping.

3. Him-NLC Project Objectives, Deliverables and Monitoring Indicators
Him-NLC Objectives Quantifiable Deliverables Monitoring Indicators

• To strengthen the Conservation learning, Research and Monitoring Centre at Dachigam National Park, Srinagar and SKUAST-Kashmir University Campus, Shalimar, by establishing state-of-the-art Nature Interpretation Centre, focusing on biodiversity of various geographical regions of J&K & India for the purpose of educating various stakeholders;
• Development and building of a specimen data repository and reference library on flora and fauna found in J&K and India
• To serve as a state-of-the-art technology centre for capacity building of officers and frontline field staff of forest/wildlife and other stakeholder departments in management and conservation of wildlife, particularly the unique rare and threatened species and critical habitats of North Western Himalayan region of J&K.
• To create a Cadre of Master Trainers among community people, leading to conservation actions & capacity building for self-sustainability of the NLC beyond the NLC duration
• To develop training modules for enhancing knowledge and skill development among the local communities and other stakeholders through training programmes, workshops and field visits, nature camps, nature trails, nature art walks.
• To promote participatory conservation action and management of forest PAs and wetland resources of the region and Promote Ecotourism, Bird tourism and nature based wildlife and cultural tourism as new enhanced sustainable naturebased livelihood opportunities and development of entrepreneurship development models in partnership with private players & SHGs.
• To maintain knowledge-sharing liaison/ relation with other Him-NLCs in IHR.
• To create dissemination materials based on UT-specific needs and its natural resources management sustainably;

• A state-of-the-art Regional Nature Learning/ Interpretation Centre with facilities relevant to meet the NLC objectives towards enriching the visitors' learning & experience (e.g. signages, exhibits, 2D/ 3D models, interpretation facility, museum (2), Amphitheatre (01), solar-powered system, public amenities, etc.);
• Database generation on biodiversity particularly wild faunal diversity;
• Development of protocols to assess, monitor and conserve them;
•Development of Demonstration models for Wetland Restoration and Management (2 wetlands) and biodiversity conservation and promotion of ecotourism as nature based sustainable livelihood option;
• Capacity Building of Government Stakeholders (Government Officials/ frontline staff of PAs-1000 Nos.; BMC Officials/ Members- 1000 Nos.);
• Awareness and Sensitization material and Programmes (Minimum 10000 students thru Eco-clubs; Community Members-3000 Nos.; Women SHG-300 Nos.);
• Creation of a cadre of 50 master trainers and conservation workers;
• Knowledge products/ Documentaries for all interactive models and best practices & training manuals;
• Training Manuals and distribution materials (10) on UT-specific needs
