Him-NLC Brief Description: | Educating the people on nature and its need for mankind through interpretation and trainings for sustainable livelihood through Respecting, Protecting, Conserving and Celebrating Nature. Himachal Pradesh, being a Hilly State in the Himalayan Ranges, is rich in natural resources and are managed by the established systems. Adverse Human Impacts on the natural resources play important role in the destruction of nature and the same can be controlled by awareness creation among the public about conservation and sustainable utilization of the natural resources. The proposed Nature Learning Centre will be one of such measures taken to develop and disseminate knowledge about nature and natural resources and their role in sustainable livelihood among the public, students and different stakeholders. Himachal Pradesh Forest department has already manages the natural resources of the state, particularly, forest areas with a number of protected areas. The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is one of such protected areas (PAs) located in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, India. Initially constituted in 1984, GHNP was formally declared a National Park in 1999, covering an area of 754.4 sq kms. In 1994, a buffer zone of 5 km from the Park's western boundary, covering 265.6 sq km. and including 2,300 households in 160 villages, was delineated as an Ecozone. Most of the population (about 15,000 to 16,000 people) in the Ecozone are poor and dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods. This project proposal for establishment of Nature Learning Centre (NLC) under National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) will help in assembling the values of this area in a common platform for better understating of the nature and natural resources through interpretations so as to appreciate the ecological functions and its importance for livelihood which will naturally promote the active participation of local people and educated mass towards protection of the nature and its integral assets. The proposal will focus on the development of facilities, which augments existing infrastructure at Sai Ropa for the better interpretation education to the visitors, school and college children, researchers, NGOs, tourists, journalists, eco-tourism operators through the local people and other stake holders. |
