Project Brief Description: The main objective of the project is to develop reuse and recycling of LIB waste . Another objective is to generate employment and improve the learning
• Development of Categorisation and collection mechanism of waste lithium ion batteries in terms of their shape and material i.e. pouch type, cylindrical etc, or Lithium Manganese Oxide, Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4), Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide, Lithium Titanate (Li2TiO3) etc This goal can be achieved by involving local communities near to Dharamshala by the systematic training develop the skill among them towards selection and repairing of LIBs cell and further processing. This aim can be achieve by periodic collection mechanism. Once the goal is achieved with the selected stockholders advance workshop will require for the development of easy characterization mechanism.
• Advancement in Gel development for the repairing/ activation/ recharge of different types of LIB electrode. Gel consists of organic polymer (like polyethylene glycol), thermally decomposable inorganic salt (like sodium bicarbonate), and lithium salt as the polyhalogen lithium metal salt, in tetrahydrofuran solution. Optimum mass ratio of 15:35:50, thereby making a gel solution with a solid content of 30%. The viscosity of the gel solution is to be fixed around 300 millipascal second for cylindrical cell. Polyhalogel compound Li9N2Cl3 (obtained by ball milling by mixing 2 moles of Li3N and 3 moles of LiCl according to the chemical formula). The gel solution obtained above was uniformly sprayed using spray gun and Inserted at the concentration of 1-5% of battery weight.
• Developed gel will require validation with commercially available alternates with detailed industrial R&D mechanism. For example laboratory grade SBR involving in this process having a cost of 15000 per 100 mg and its commercial alternates are available at accost of 12000 per kg, but need validation. Also training and development is very much needed for economic alternates of vacuum sealing devices, coating devices. This job also require the services of industrial partner and stockholders. Also validation of charging- discharging cycles toward different types of batteries.
• Optimization process for the recovery of valuable materials form anode (copper film, negative electrode) and cathode (aluminium film, positive electrode) materials. Sometime after the gel insertion battery will not work properly for that we are planning for next level treatment by dismantling. A proper training is required for this and small machinery kit needs to be developing with the help of industrial partner.
