Project Brief Description: |
Farmers in Sikkim often face challenges in accessing markets, especially for perishable produce. Access to credit, seeds, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs are limited for smallholder farmers. Poor infrastructure limits farmers' access to various resources affecting their ability to fetch fair prices for their produce. High input costs, coupled with inadequate financial support and extension services has impede farmers' ability to adopt modern farming techniques and improve productivity. The state Sikkim is highly vulnerable to Climate Change which has direct negative consequences on production and productivity, causing serious descent of rural livelihoods and increase food insecurity. With the decrease in precipitation and spring discharge, the agriculture productivity gets affected and it affects the socio-economic condition of the state. The climatic study of the state is not only important to understand the physical atmospheric system but is also crucial to assess the influenced of any climatic change on the biophysical and socio-economic setup of the state. The organic farm women faced limited access to land and resources, unpaid and underpaid labour, limited access to education and trainings on farming, gender based social norms and stereotypes, limited market access and control over produce. There is need for comprehensive efforts to promote gender equality and empower women in agriculture. Climate-Resilient Farming (CRF) is an approach that includes sustainably using existing natural resources through crop and livestock production systems to achieve long-term higher productivity and farm incomes under climate variability. It does not treat shocks and disturbances only as episodic, but regards many of them as constant and gradual threats. Climate resilient agriculture practices can help reduce hunger and poverty in the face of climate change. If the Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, achieving food & nutritional security and promoting sustainable organic production are to be grasps in the state, Climate Resilient farming as community participatory approach need to be implement in the state. Empowering rural organic farm women of the state psychologically, socially and economically to bring gender equality and ultimately to bring sustainable development, the study proposed with the following Objectives- 1. To identify potential leader among farm women, provide skills, inputs and conduct capacity building programmes on Climate Resilient Farming. 2. To develop a climate-resilient farming model village and promote gender-inclusive approaches to agricultural development 3. To analyse the socio-economic changes among the farm women with the intervention of the climate resilient farming.

Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: |
In the state Sikkim, Self Help Groups (SHGs) plays important and active role in engaging women to various livelihood options including saving money, small processing unit and value-addition of local vegetables and fruits, making soaps, brooms and other crafting activities. Also, the Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) actively performing in the state. The proposed study targets the rural organic farm women from SC and ST category as potential beneficiary of the study. The potential farm women will be identified from the various SHGs and FPOs working in the vulnerable villages through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Social Network Analysis (SNA). The identify leaders will be train and will act as key agent to motivate the fellow women in the respective villages to participate and engaged actively in the developing of Climate Resilient farming model in the village.
