Project Brief Description: Himalayan villages face severe water stress from glacial retreat, erratic rainfall, drying springs, and limited infrastructure, with women and children bearing the brunt of water collection. Untreated household greywater worsens sanitation and contaminates shallow water sources. This project proposes a decentralized hybrid system combining electrocoagulation (EC) and ceramic membrane filtration with rooftop rainwater harvesting, enabling safe, non-potable reuse for toilets, gardening, and cleaning. The system is modular, off-grid compatible, compact, low-sludge, and year-round functional. Two pilot plants will serve 30–35 urban and 10–12 rural households, while 50+ SHG members and youth will be trained in operation and maintenance. The project develops novel ceramic membranes, generates performance data, and demonstrates a scalable, community-driven water reuse model.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

• Rural households (~200 people across 50 homes)
• Local SHGs and youth groups
• Panchayats, local NGOs, and water boards
• Academic partners and technology developers
