| Project Brief Description: | Himalayan villages face severe water stress from glacial retreat, erratic rainfall, drying springs, and limited infrastructure, with women and children bearing the brunt of water collection. Untreated household greywater worsens sanitation and contaminates shallow water sources. This project proposes a decentralized hybrid system combining electrocoagulation (EC) and ceramic membrane filtration with rooftop rainwater harvesting, enabling safe, non-potable reuse for toilets, gardening, and cleaning. The system is modular, off-grid compatible, compact, low-sludge, and year-round functional. Two pilot plants will serve 30–35 urban and 10–12 rural households, while 50+ SHG members and youth will be trained in operation and maintenance. The project develops novel ceramic membranes, generates performance data, and demonstrates a scalable, community-driven water reuse model. | |||

|
• Developed greywater treatment using devolved novel technology to reuse the greywater and prevention of environmental pollution. • Storage of rainwater and after treatment using ceramic membrane-based technology to supply potable water to hill area. • Train the local youth to make supplied system to run for at least next 10 years with minimal maintenance charge. • Train local youth for earning model to implement similar solution in large scale. |
• Pilot electrocoagulation–ceramic membrane greywater treatment system • Functional decentralized rainwater harvesting units with treated potable-quality output. • Water quality assessment report • Training modules and hands-on capacity-building • Livelihood-oriented implementation model • Technical manual, SOPs, and brief for integration with NIUA’s Himalayan Urban Bioshed initiatives. • Knowledge products: SOPs, manuals, and policy-oriented briefs for state agencies. |
• Monitoring in comparison to the baseline information/ data to be provided by the proponent: • Volume of greywater treated and reused per day. • Rainwater harvested and post-treatment water quality compliance with BIS standards. • System performance metrics (membrane flux, removal efficiency, operational uptime). • Replication interest and uptake potential within NIUA’s Urban Bioshed programme. • No. of community members trained • No. of research papers, technical reports, and policy documents published. |
