Project Brief Description: India, a megadiverse country with over 47,000 plant species (28% endemic; 1,200+ threatened), faces growing risks from habitat loss, climate change, and unsustainable land use. Project Jeevan Beej proposes a National Seed Bank to conserve India’s endemic and IUCN-listed species through state-of-the-art storage, cryopreservation, and systematic collection from diverse ecological zones. The project integrates community seed banks, local experts, and botanical institutions, promoting participatory conservation, training, and capacity building. Partnerships with universities, NBPGR, and international bodies will advance research, ecological restoration, and species reintroduction. By ensuring long-term seed viability, genetic diversity, and data-driven monitoring, the project supports reforestation, habitat restoration, climate adaptation, and national biodiversity strategies, securing India’s plant heritage and strengthening ecological resilience.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

• Local & Indigenous Communities: Enhanced livelihoods, food security, and sustainable use of native plants.
• Farmers & Agro-pastoralists: Access to quality seeds, and participation in restoration programs.
• Researchers & Academic Institutions: Centralized seed repository and Seed Atlas for research, restoration, and biodiversity monitoring.
• Government & Policymakers: Data-driven tools , policy support for conservation, and climate adaptation.
• Conservation NGOs & CBOs: Technical support, national integration, and collaborative opportunities
• Future Generations & Society: Long-term ecological resilience, food security, and preservation of India’s plant heritage.

3. Project Objectives, Deliverables and Monitoring Indicators
Project Objectives Quantifiable Deliverables Monitoring Indicators
• Conserve and secure seeds of India’s endemic and IUCN Red listed plant species through systematic collection, documentation, and long-term storage, thereby preventing genetic erosion and supporting biodiversity conservation at a national scale.
• Develop a comprehensive, geo-referenced Seed Atlas that maps the distribution, ecological traits, and conservation status of each collected species, serving as a decision-support tool for researchers, policymakers, and restoration practitioners.
• Integrate and strengthen community seed banks by linking grassroots conservation efforts with national infrastructure, fostering participatory seed selection, knowledge exchange, and resource sharing for enhanced local and national impact.
• Facilitate research, ecological restoration, and reintroduction of threatened species by providing high-quality, viable seeds to scientific institutions and conservation agencies, supporting both in-situ and ex-situ conservation strategies.
• Empower local communities, farmers, and women’s groups through training and capacity-building programs in seed collection, storage, and sustainable use, thereby promoting seed sovereignty and resilient livelihoods.
• Ensure food and nutritional security by safeguarding plant genetic resources critical for climate resilience, future crop improvement, and sustainable agriculture, in alignment with national and international conservation commitments.
• National seed bank collection of endemic and IUCN Red-listed Himalayan plant species with proper documentation and long-term storage.
• Geo-referenced Seed Atlas containing distribution maps, ecological traits, and conservation status
• High-quality seed supply system for research, ecological restoration, and reintroduction programs.
• Capacity-building programs and training modules for communities, farmers, and women’s groups on seed collection, storage, and conservation practices.
• Knowledge products including SOPs, manuals, and policy briefs.
• Monitoring in comparison to the baseline information/ data to be provided by the proponent:
• No. of species collected, documented, and stored in the national seed bank.
• No. of community seed banks strengthened and protocols adopted.
• Viability and germination rates of stored seeds over time.
• Participants trained and community groups engaged in seed conservation.
• No. of restoration projects supported with seed material.
• No. of research papers, technical reports, and policy documents published
• No. of Capacity-building programs and training modules
