Project Brief Description: | The IHR as biological hotspot exhibits a wide range of farming systems and harbours a rich crop diversity such as millets, cereals, pseudo-cereals and vegetables. Many crop varieties have innate capability to withstand climate variability and maintain ecological as well as nutritional security. This project aims to undertake an in-depth study on the state of agro-ecology, document climate resilient farming practices and develop strategies for upscaling the key elements of good practices covering the border districts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim. Major objectives of the project are to: (i) assess the impacts of recent climate change on agro-ecology and farming practices in the border districts of Indian Himalayan region, (ii) document the traditional knowledge and key features of good practices pertaining to conservation of traditional crop varieties in the pilot areas, (iii) assess the land suitability classes at landscape scale for various niche crops and map the extent of past and present area under cultivation, (iv) evolve strategies for climate resilient farming and conservation of unique geographical indicators especially millets and pseudo-cereals, and other such land races, within a Landscape approach (iv) develop farmers’ cooperatives and agribusiness based on traditional crops for enhancing livelihoods in the pilot Gram Panchayats/cluster of villages, (v) develop species specific post-harvest technology and associated inputs, and (vi) facilitate sustainable marketing of the produce through the community based organizations. | |||
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | • Farmers of the border villages, actively involved in the production of the agro-ecology for their sustenance and subsistence. |
