Project Brief Description: Glaciers in the Himalaya are receding faster than in any other part of the world. The receding and thinning of the Himalayan glaciers can be attributed primarily due to global warming which causes anthropogenic emissions from aerosols including black carbon and greenhouse gases. The ever increasing native and floating population influx near these glaciers, consequent deforestation and land-use changes have also adversely affected these glaciers. This project addresses the NMHS-BTG "Environmental Assessment and Management" and focuses on anthropogenic impacts on glacier receding and thinning in the Himalayan region. The intervention area undertaken covers the five (5) different glaciers in five States of IHR viz., Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. This study will be mainly performed by using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (RS & GIS) tool to assess glacier/ stream flow and surface run-off. The study will help to make a base line data generation on snow melt rate in different state of IHR due to the climate change and it will also help to assess the impact of snow melt on hydropower projects, human consumption, irrigation, aquatic biodiversity and livelihood options. The project will also organize various awareness programmes in said IHR states to enhance capacity building of the stakeholders including women in terms of increasing their resilience and adaptive capacity due to climate change for their sustainable livelihood options.
