Project Brief Description: | Domestic sewage wastewater is one of the major wastewater released from the Indian Himalayan region. Though physical and chemical treatment process have proven its efficiency, exploration and implementation of biological process is gaining wide attention. One such process involves microalgal bioremediation process that utilizes existing nitrogen and phosphorous in wastewater as growth nutrients and supports CO2 sequestration. In addition to wastewater treatment, the process delivers high-value biomass feedstock that can be further explored for biofuels and value-added products. The proposed project focuses on utilizing one such domestic wastewater released from Hamirpur municipal corporation, which is located at the Indian Himalayan regions. The geographic location and climatic conditions of this region is highly feasible for microalgal cultivation and it will deliver potential biomass as bioenergy feedstock. The proposed project has five major objectives as follows: (1) Collection and characterization of primary wastewater from the domestic sewage treatment plant (STP), (2) Lab-scale process optimization of microalgae-mediated wastewater treatment followed by scale-up in an open raceway pond, (3) Optimization of biomass harvesting on large-scale, (4) On-site implementation of the optimized scale-up model and its feasibility evaluation, (5) Conversion of harvested microalgal biomass into biofuels and high-value products such as biocrude oil (via hydrothermal liquefaction), biogas (via anaerobic digestion), biofertilizer, and nutraceuticals. Addressing these objectives, the project will carry out the bioremediation process under scale-up conditions in 2000 L to 5000 L raceway ponds. In addition, the technology will be demonstrated on-site at the Hamirpur sewage treatment plant and it will be further optimized to achieve enhanced productivity. The bioenergy that will be produced from the process will contribute towards enhancing socio-economic life of the local population and create a platform to scale-up and implement at other Himalayan regions. | |||
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | • The project will benefit the local community, industries. Use of bioenergy will reduce carbon emission from the region and address climate change. |
