Project Brief Description: | The Darma Valley is located in the northern half of the Pithoragarh District of Uttarakhand, India. It is situated between the Kali and Dhauliganga rivers and is part of the Kumaon region. This valley is home to the Bhotiya tribal society locally known as Darmya or Darmani. The specific focus of the present study is on the Darma Valley itself, which encompasses indigenous tribal villages scattered across a range of altitudes from 2250 to 4350 meters above sea level. The total population of the Darma Valley is approximately 1000 people. Although the valley has diverse agro-climatic zones with unique crop/agri-enterprises, climate change in this particular Himalayan region has serious implications for livelihood support systems and overall human well-being. To foster climate smart local farming community and for upliftment of livelihood in the region, the regional neglected and underutilized (NUS) crop species such as grain amaranth, buckwheat, leafy mustard and black cumin will be promoted by introduction of various technological as well as biotechnological interventions. There will be two kinds of interventions, viz. 1) Promotion of indigenous climatic resilient crops under open cultivation during the available short growing season (March-October) for enhancing nutritional security; 2) Enhancement of cropping period using climate-smart techniques (modified crop protection structures) for enhancing farmers' income. Germplasm of farmers varieties/landraces of target species will be collected for screening, purification and enhancement of climate-resilient traits for extensive cultivation in target region. Region specific interventions will be done at farmer's field to enhance the income and livelihoods. | |||
