Project Brief Description: Baseline data on fungal species composition in cold desert is needed so that potential changes in cold desert mycota due to pollution, global climate changes, forest fragmentation, can be monitored. • Knowledge of the mushrooms their (symbiotic) association with host, is crucial for developing forest management plans and reforestation programs. • Knowledge on host and substrata specificity of mushrooms in general, and especially for cold desert species, is very poor. Similarly, attention has to be drawn to potential substrata specificity of saprotrophic taxa. Data on the diversity and substrata specificity for tree, and litter decomposing are crucial for forest management and ecology studies. • An extensive survey is required to evaluate economic, social, and cultural value of mushrooms in the lifestyle of the native people, in order to up scale their skills, and socio-economic status in future. • Culturing, cultivation and conservation of two locally available wild edible mushrooms • Capacity building: train research scholars in the field of taxonomy of mushrooms (morphological as well as molecular) through project work. At the same time acquaint the local mushroom collectors the sustainable and responsible methods of mushroom picking.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

Local inhabitants (approximately 200 households) will be the direct beneficiaries of the project.

3. Project Objectives, Deliverables and Monitoring Indicators
Project Objectives Quantifiable Deliverables Monitoring Indicators
• Generate baseline information based on the diversity, abundance, and distribution of mushrooms of cold desert in Kargil district in Jammu & Kashmir.
• Investigate and collect the indigenous knowledge on mushrooms, and understand their economic, social, and cultural value in the lifestyle of the natives.
• Develop strategies for enhancement of livelihood security by optimum and sustainable utilization of local resources and adopt region specific strategy to introduce mushroom cultivation in order to upscale skills and socio-economic status of natives.
• Mushroom database for the district Kargil, Ladakh Indicating the correlation of the spatial-temporal distribution of the identified fungal species to physicochemical properties of soil, substrate specificity, host specificity (if any), vegetation and environmental factors.
• Documentation of traditional knowledge and best practices of mushrooms cultivation by locals (for Kargil District)
• Develop guidelines for harvesting economically important mushrooms (for collectors/ traders).
• Enhancement of livelihood security by optimum and sustainable utilization of local resources (beneficiaries >200 SC/ST)
• Develop Standard Operating procedures (SOPs) for cultivation of the endemic species of 2 districts of Ladakh towards its conservation, cultivation, product development
