Project Brief Description: | Tripura is a hilly state in the north-eastern region of India and lies in five mountain ranges. Due to its geographical isolation, economic progress in Tripura state is hindered and poverty and unemployment continue. Most residents are involved in agriculture, horticulture, allied activities such as Horti-selviculture, livestock and fish farming. Women play an important role in the family's day to day livelihood activities. They show better appreciation of the need for conservation of forests and water resources, since they are more directly concerned with the collection of firewood and other minor forest products, as well as fetching water for meeting daily needs. They are also actively engaged in every stages of agriculture and horticulture production in the field, right from sowing till harvest and marketing. On the other hand, due to less knowledge and experience on improved and scientific method of cultivation of multiple crops. The availability of cultivable land is also limited as almost 55% of the state is hills and hillocks where normal cultivation practices cannot be followed. The paucity of plain land available for cultivation of agricultural crops is also an imperative cause for giving higher stress on exploring horticultural development on hilly terrains and introduction of crops of economic value by maximum utilization of land by growing multiple crops, preparation of value added product preparation, mushroom cultivation and crop diversification. In this context, a strong need is felt for livelihood intervention of the tribal poor through horticulture based eco-friendly development and promotion of women friendly entrepreneurship for livelihood improvement in rural area of Tripura, which may act as a very remunerative alternative to subsistence horticulture farming. To achieve this, locally available suitable measures will be taken up for promotion of horticulture based quality planting materials as well as nursery plant production and trade, processing and value addition of major and underutilized/ traditional fruits and vegetables. Additionally, improved technologies will be also provided for scientific multiple cropping such as mushroom, fruits, vegetables and flowers, with simple and locally available resources. |
