Project Brief Description: Two potential river basins, one in the Western Himalaya (Nayar watershed, Himachal Pradesh) and another in the Eastern Himalaya (Kameng watershed, Arunachal Pradesh) have been selected as the case areas. The major problems identified and will be further targeted to resolve in this work are as follows.
• Unavailability in low-cost equipment for in-situ measurement
• Understanding the micro-environment at river bed and its variation with altitude
• Ranges in essential parameters of micro-environment characteristics (e.g. flow velocity, depth, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity, velocity and turbidity etc.) are not focused
• Ecological habitat characterization
• No methodology for evaluation of CIA is standardized
This project develops a holistic methodology to improve the water security, renewable energy, reduce the extreme hydrological vulnerability, and enhance biodiversity. As the project is generic in nature, the present methodology can be helpful for conducting CIA assessment in other basins by considering the local factors.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

Hydro power developers, river basin management authorities, state water resources department and other ecology and bio-diversity conservation departments are the key beneficiaries of the present project
