Project Brief Description: |
The Mountain Tourists on treks and mountaineering expeditions contribute to the increasing
volumes of solid waste seen in many of the more remote and higher mountain regions.
Where there are no adequate systems in place to collect and manage the waste –
particularly in poorer countries and regions – waste is dumped on the side of trails, at
camps, or in glacier crevasses. The growth in tourists visiting popular mountain regions, and
the accompanying waste issues can be staggering. The problem with SWM resulted in
diverse negative impacts on the environment, human health, and safety that result in
economic, environmental and biological degradation of the eco-sensitive areas. The most
severe problems arise due to the indiscriminate garbage dumping over unprotected soil, and
heavy rainfall enabling the leachate to percolate through the soil and degrade the water table
and soil resources. Following are some of the observations that needs immediate action: 1. Most part of hill towns, there is no collection system achieved due to various operational issues and lack of proper infrastructure. The tourist points in hill towns are not serviced on a daily basis. Due to this, there are large pile-up of plastic waste in these areas. 2. Current system of waste processing in Mussoorie is only 20% and that too passive. 3. The current situation of cleanliness in the hill towns is not upto the mark, as there are several Garbage vulnerable points and spots of illegal dumping near the ecological trails and the valleys are remarkably high. 4. There is less transparency in the way the sanitation activities are planned and carried out. The routes are not specific for collection. Moreover, there is lack on the service delivery check on a day to day basis. Also there is difficulty in locating the defaulters. |
