| Project Brief Description: | Globally, most of the river systems have been regulated due to developmental activities (i.e. road and hydropower construction), which causes degradation of the river ecosystem and consequent impact on the fish fauna. In this perspective, this project will assess ecological state and threat status to fish fauna of the Alaknanda-Bhagirathi-Ganga river system as a case study. For determining the ecological state, diatom and benthic macroinvertebrate communities will be sampled at seasonal intervals downstream of the Vishnuprayag and Manerihydroprojects in respective rivers at number of selected locations using BMWP and ASPT scores. While, for determining the threat status to fish fauna, the abundance of fish fauna will be collected and determine according to the IUCN categories. Results will tell about the present state of fish fauna and water quality of both river systems. Finally, the prime expected benefit of the project will be current ecological and water quality states of both river ecosystems, which would be very useful to manage the river ecosystems as well as strengthen livelihood of fishermen, ecosystem services for inhabitants of the towns along the river course. The project falls under the broad thematic group of Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity of the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS). | ||||
| Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | Villagers and townships populace living along the riversides in terms of socio-economic and health. Fishermen communities on restoring fish populations. |
