Project Brief Description: This project aims to initiate the process of creating access to safe drinking water for all rural households in Ravangla and Darjeeling blocks through community engagement in conserving perennial sources of water. It seeks to do so by assessing the drinking water quality parameters of different natural sources, estimating the cost of access to water fit for drinking and by sensitizing the community of the imminent threats to drinking water security and engaging with them in identification of ways to deal it. The project also envisages an adaptive decision support system that will reduce water management woes by building on historical data and community knowledge base. Based on this information system, one of the outcomes of the project will be clear road-maps to improve drinking water facilities for the estimated population growth in the Ravangla Block, Sikkim, and Darjeeling Block, West Bengal for the next 10 years. The project compliments the Broad Thematic Areas (BTAs) "Water Resource Management" under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS). This project by ensuring drinking water security for rural communities in aims to showcase sustainable actions to reduce manmade risks, sustain tourism and other livelihood options including agriculture that is under stress.
