Project Brief Description: Over the past few decades, anthropogenic changes in the climate of the earth have become the focus of scientific and social attention. The most significant of these is the increased levels of CO2 and other Green House Gases (GHGs) (CH4, N2O, O3 and CFC's) in the atmosphere leading to global warming. Besides increase in the temperature, the quantity and the event of the rain and snow fall has also become more unpredictable and erratic. Apple farming is an important activity and profession of farmer communities in the Kashmir valley. In J&K State like in other parts of the country climatic variations such as extreme temperatures in summers, short and warm winters, and shortage of irrigation water during critical periods of growth and outbreak of pests is now a common phenomenon being faced by the orchardists. Frequency of natural disasters like drought, floods and strong winds has also increased. Under the changing climatic scenario new areas at higher altitudes could be exploited for apple cultivation. Moreover, adaptation strategies like screening and adoption of climate resilient varieties for assessing the growth response needs to be studied. In this view, aim of the project are to: (i) assess the yield and quality of fruits and other growth parameters of the apple growing at different altitudes and in different regions of the valley and laying out the experiment under ambient field conditions for screening growth response of some exotic climate resilient varieties at some selected sites of the Kashmir valley, (ii) assess ambient concentration of GHG's and soil health (nutrients and microbiology at different sites in the Kashmir valley and (iii) delineate apple growing areas with the help of RS and GIS technology.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: Orchardists and farmers of the Kashmir valley
