Project Brief Description: |
Presently, there is an exodus of hill farmers to better pastures, as they are unable to earn sustenance
from the land resources. It results to migration of rural people to get better opportunities of income
generation in the town areas. Male migration is a characteristic feature of this region, which adversely
affects the life of women. It increases women's workload manifold and they also become responsible
for many other tasks. Water scarcity is a major constraint here leading to qualms about crop yields, as
most of the farming is rainfed. (TERI Report No. 2006BT28, 2007-08). Other major problems faced by
the farmers are paucity of updated information, improved inputs such as seed /varieties and
technology, and market. In addition, factors such as deforestation, extensive soil erosion, increased
water run-off and reduced percolation of water into the soil is directly contributing to loss of
agricultural productivity. As the farmers were looking for respite from these tribulations, they were
keen to adopt new crops/technologies that could minimize risks emanating from incessant/scanty rains.
Hence this project is envisaged to build capacities for developing the medicinal bioresource value chain
as a viable approach for providing financial security to the marginal farmers of the selected villages.
There is an urgent need to check and introduce a sustainable resource utilization pattern, which is
stable in terms of space, time, culture, and the environment.
