Project Brief Description: | The project is necessary because it addresses the growing problem of solid waste management in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). The increase in industrial and urban activities has resulted in various environmental challenges such as pollution and degradation of land, air, and water resources. The traditional practices of the local communities tend to be sustainable but are being disregarded due to development and environmental degradation. The lack of solid waste management operations has caused soil, air, and water pollution, and the proposed project aims to remediate waste dump sites in the region using microbial assisted bio/phytoremediation. The project will assess the suitability of plant species and isolated microbes, build the capacity of stakeholders, and reclaim and restore waste dump sites. The project aligns with the national mission on Himalayan studies and the government's initiatives to improve waste management and promote sustainable development such as the Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat mission, and the sustainable development goals and LiFE mission of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India. | |||

Project Objectives | Quantifiable Deliverables | Monitoring Indicators |
• To identify, isolate and characterize the microbes for bioremediation potential from waste dumping sites and development of microbial consortia for bioremediation of waste dumping sites in the colder regions. • To assess the suitable plant species and isolated microbes for the bio/ phytoremediation capacity of the municipal waste dump sites. • To build the capacity of stakeholders w.r.t. microbial-assisted bio/phytoremediation Eco-restoration model set-up for municipal waste management. |
• Standardization of microbial consortia for efficient decomposition and bioremediation of municipal organic waste • Standardization of suitable plant species for the phytoremediation study of the selected sites. • Demonstration of the proposed pilot plant for In-vitro bio capacity study of identified microbial species in the pilot plant. • Restoration of one waste dumping sites with developed microbial species and selected plant species. • Training/ workshop/ Capacity building of stakeholders on the bio/phytoremediation Eco-restoration model |
