Project Brief Description: Arunachal Pradesh is a home of about 26 major tribes and over 110 sub-tribes of human societies and has a complex lifestyle entirely dependent on the forest resources. The traditional livelihood system of these tribes people consists of shifting cultivation, settled cultivation, and hunting, poaching of wild animals and gathering of forest produces. In Aruanchal Pradesh, hunting is cultural and widespread traditional activities and has led to low wildlife abundance. While in Namdapha National Park and Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary cum tiger reserve which are located in Changlang and East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, hunting and poaching [Hunting-illegal fishing and trapping of wild fauna like tiger, barking deer, leaf deer, sambhar, wild boar, bear, wildcat, and a variety of birds by local inhabitants (Lisu, Chakma, and Mishmi) for bush meat and hide] is a severe concern for the wildlife species conservation and management. Habitat destruction poses further threat to wildlife. Although the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 was extended to Arunachal Pradesh in May 1973, and prohibits picking, poaching, and hunting of wild animals and plants, its enforcement is not to be of much use in this area. The assessment of peoples attitudes and perceptions towards conservation has become an important aspect in many studies of wildlife conservation. Wildlife conservation, success depends on the attitudes of people towards conservation. Equally, understanding factors which influence attitudes is important to enable wildlife managers to implement approaches that attract support of stakeholders and the general public. It is necessary to seek and obtain the active participation of potential stakeholders not only in the technical efficiency of a conservation technology, but also the extent of satisfying cultural, social, and political considerations in the environment which can help change the attitudes of indigenous people towards wildlife existence and conservation. People also need to be informed through specific awareness campaigns or environmental education which can help change their attitudes towards conservation. Thus, if people are made aware about the importance of wildlife and if potential source of livelihood is shown to the tribals inhabiting around the protected area, the pressure of hunting and NTFPs collection could be minimised which forms the thrust objective of this project. In this project, surveys are needed to identify hotspot zones to improve/attract tourists. Local people around the park will be trained as potential field guides to take tourists on birding and butter flying tours with the permissions from Forest Department. Lastly, it is expected that the locals attitude towards wildlife conservation will change in a positive direction and they help in promoting conservation activities in the protected area.
