Project Brief Description: Plastic are one of the hazardous item for our environment as it non biodegrable it creates problem for drainage system, fertile land convert into unfertild land. Day by day we become habituate by using plastic to carry goods. Time has come to think alternate itma which can be used as substitute of plastic. In northeast India Phrynium pubinerve a packing plants which leaves are used to wrapping goods, cook rice and as medicine. This leaves can be a alternate source of plastic; now-a days people are extracting leaves from wild sources for their self consumption and to sell in the market. The leaf has potential market in northeast India particularly in Meghalaya In the proposed project area (West Garo Hills district and Ri-Bhoi district) Phrynium pubinerve is under pressure due to over exploitation of wild population for business purposes, habitat loss, landslides, jhum cultivation, occasional forest fire, human settlement, and various other development activities such as road and building construction. The other important threats are harvesting of species for local medicine, commercial trading, harvested for other purposes like rituals and ornament plants etc. Due to huge demand of packing leaves for its preference in wrapping food items particularly in Meghalaya and mounting pressure on wild population to meet the demand, there is a need for either domestication or cultivation of the packing plants on large scale to fulfill the ever increasing demand. Indiscriminate collection and over harvesting of packing plants from their natural habitats has adversely affected the availability of the species. Therefore, approaches for cultivation, sustainable harvesting, and protection against existing threats will be developed for conservation, livelihood enhancement of the local communities in Meghalaya and reduce plastic pressure on environment.
