Project Brief Description: | The genetic variability in Kala zeera in the form of land races for this high valued low volume cash crop species exists in some specific higher areas in the north-western Himalayas of J&K State. In the recent past continuous unscientific and ruthless exploitation of this crop by tribal people of these areas for immediate financial gains has lead to low productivity and genetic erosion of land races. If this situation is not taken care of, the zeera crop area may soon become drastically reduced which may, ultimately, lead to heavy economic losses. Under the present proposal efforts shall be made to develop Kala zeera germplasm bank, create community based general public awareness programmes in collaboration with collaborating agencies to give awareness 5 about importance of conservation of landraces and appropriate time of harvest to economise zeera cultivation in the area. Immediate information shall also be delivered for increasing the area under the crop and to domesticate this spice to get maximum returns through its cultivation on scientific lines. Under the proposal awareness programmes shall also be conducted for concerned tribal communities regarding importance of conservation of this spice. The concerted efforts on part of the government and scientists are imperative for speedy redressal of this problem so as to save this valuable cash crop from being wiped out. The cultivated Zeera entries from Himachal and Uttarakhand shall be evaluated under agronomic practices at MAR&ES, Gurez and at the same time efforts shall also be made to cultivate elite accessions (collected from Gurez once a zeera germplasm bank is established at Gurez) at Himachal and Uttarakhand. In addition the germplasm/local landraces of Kala Zeera that will be collected from different pockets/hot spots in Gurez valley will be characterized using molecular markers. The unique landraces will be preserved in germplasm bank and seed material will be also submitted to national germplasm conservation authority, NBPGR, NEW Delhi for registration. | |||
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | i) The local tribal farmers of hilly region in state Jammu and Kashmir |
