Project Brief Description: Indigenous Knowledge (IK) is a knowledge developed by an indigenous community of a region and bears a unique characteristic. It varies from one community to another and plays a significant role at local level for their livelihood. In India, there are about 705 tribes with 10.45 crore population (Census of India, 2011), which is 8.6% of the total population of the country. In north-eastern region of India, there are 145 major tribal communities and are directly dependent upon the IRS and natural resources for their sustenance. They have inherited rich indigenous knowledge from their forefathers. At present, Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) are in depleting trend due to urbanization and other factors which is gradually replacing many indigenous knowledge systems.
In this project, the major tribes like Adi, Apatani, Monpa, Nyishi and Wanchoo of Arunachal Pradesh will be selected based on the population and their richness in IKS. Additionally, the documentation of the IKS will also be done in all major aspects like weaving, handicraft, woodcarving, and natural resource management to understand their rich cultural heritage.
Based on the documentation, the screening and prioritisation will be done on the relevance of intellectual property right related to indigenous knowledge system viz., Geographical Indications (GI); protection of new plant variety; patent as per TRIPS agreement, etc. The SWOT analysis of each IKS will be done to analyse its potential and weakness w.r.t IPR. The proposed study will help in protection of IKS which will benefit the tribes of Arunachal Pradesh and bringing international recognition to their IKS.
Extension program on the application of IPR in relation to their IKS will be done to create awareness among the tribal population for their capacity building. The database will be prepared to dessimante the information related to IPR and IKS.
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: Artisans, Artist, farmers, and other stakeholders of the selected tribe
