Project Brief Description: It is well known that white button mushroom has emerged as one of the preferred vegetable items in Indian society. Mushroom is not only good for the liver and general health of the people but also a good source of income generation for the farmers. Mushroom farming is emerging as a profitable activity in the Agriculture Sector of Uttarakhand State, India. Small and marginal farmers have significantly responded to the initiatives for popularizing this activity, but non-availability of good quality compost is a major hurdle for this activity. The farmers of Uttarakhand, especially those located in the hills are keen to go in for cultivation of white button mushroom. However, they are constrained because they are located in far-flung areas, which are not easily accessible. The terrain in the hills is undulating. Wheat straw is available but in limited quantities. Besides, it has to be brought from far-off places. In addition, other ingredients such as gypsum, potassium sulphate, super phosphate and chicken manure are also required. Due to various constraints, farmers can take up this activity at a small scale and that too through an equipment, which is easy to assemble and transport. They usually prepare compost manually or purchase from Pantnagar University, Jeolikot and Dehradun. Manually prepared compost is often contaminated and not as productive. However, purchased compost is costly and difficult to arrange for small and marginal farmers to their locations. To overcome these obstacles, a design has been developed under the name "Pant Mushroom Composting Assembly" after making extensive efforts since 2005. This structure is portable, flexible and easy to operate, relatively small and can use sunlight to generate heat without a boiler. Thus, it reduces production, purchasing and transportation costs of compost and can increase the productivity of the compost. It can also be used to fumigate the substrates used for the oyster and milky mushroom. It can prepare 2 to 2.5 tons of compost within 14 to 18 days and can fumigate about 500-600 kg wet wheat and paddy straw.
