Project Brief Description: The national mission for sustaining the Himalayan ecosystem is one of the major national missions on climate change under the national action plan on climate change. Addressing it involves the continuous health monitoring of Dams in the Himalayan region. To this end the objective of the proposal targets “The design and development of unmanned surface vehicle (USV) for real-time bathymetry survey, monitoring of underwater structures (Dams/ Bridges), collecting critical water parameters, search and rescue operation and live video transfer wirelessly to the ground control station”. Unmanned surface vehicles (USV) are gaining popularity for bathymetry surveys, monitoring of dams, and search and object detection. The main aspect of this technology is to combine an autonomous navigation framework, environmental sensors, and a multibeam echosounder to collect submerged topography, temperature, and wind speed and monitor the USV status during prescribed path-planning missions. Globally there is a lot of research going on USV and its implementation in various water bodies [from lakes, rivers, reservoirs, subsea, sea, and oceans]. Global companies (NORBIT, Unique Group, Hydro International, Oceanalpha, etc.) and Institutes (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, etc) are some of the major contributors and thrust forces to develop such technologies. Dam monitoring is an essential part of sustaining the ecology and predicting unforeseen events in the Himalayan region. USVs are vital to safety commitments and act as an eye continuously monitoring the critical parameters associated with dam safety. Hence the proposal addresses the very important and urgent development in this regard.
