Project Brief Description: | Geographical context; climate, altitude, main ecological and socio- economic characteristics; policy context: relationship to national policies; community context The Karbi Anglong District is situated in the central part of Assam, bounded by the state of Nagaland and Golaghat district in east, Hojai district in the west, Golaghat and Nagaon district in the north and N.C. Hills district and Nagaland in the south. The district lies between 92o.7 - 93o. 52'E and 25o. 31' and 26o.41' N and is one of the interior most regions of Northeast India in Assam covered with high hills and thick forests. The district covers an area of10434.00 Sq. Kms. It is politically an autonomous unit consisting of three subdivisions. The district is bordered by the state of Meghalaya on the eastern direction and North Cachar Hills and Naga Hills on the southern and western direction respectively. Indigenous tribal communities particularly Karbi people form the majority of the population. The district of Karbi Anglong is also rich in natural vegetation and this forms an indispensable part in the life of the Karbis. There are the areas with gentle slopes and valleys in between the hillocks. These areas consist of the reserved forests, unclassed forests and the paddocks of shifting cultivations. The average maximum & minimum temperature of the Karbi Anglong district are 30o C & 18o C respectively. The temperature in summer ranges from 23oC to 32oC, while in winter, it ranges from 6oC to 12oC. The average rainfall is 1,200 mm approximately. Total number of inhabited villages of the district is 2712 with total population 843347. The population of cultivators amongst all the main workers in Karbi Anglong District was 58.67 percent, agricultural laborers record to 17.09 percent with males 10.98 percent and females 27.37 percent. In case of Household industry workers the percentage is 2.53 with males 1.31 percent and females 4.58 percent. The percentage of women participation is much more than male, with 4.58 females and 1.31 males. Research has shown that bamboo charcoal is one of the base material for human health right from water treatment to its uses as shield from electromagnetic radiation. With the increasing demand for a return to nature, there is an increasing preference for products processed or extracted from plants. With its high growth rate, wide range of applications and high renewing ability, bamboo resources occupies a significant position in the 21st century. | ||||
