Project Brief Description: | Nagaland is a small State of North East India with geographical area of 16,579 Sq. Km. and its population stands at nearly 20 lakhs as per the latest population Census, 2011. Nearly 90% of its total population belong to Scheduled Tribes. Its vast area is under forest and nearly 52% of area of total geographical area is under forest. Agriculture is the mainstay of its economy with a supplementary contribution from forestry and other non farm activities. Typical topography and undulating hills all throughout the State makes agricultural operations a bit complicated and old traditional practice of "Jhuming" i.e. shifting cultivation is considered as the main farming practices of its population. Irrespective of sex, people are habituated to work in the "Jhum" field for their day to day livelihood management and a vast area of the State is under "Jhum" cultivation. Hence, forest products play a significant role in the management of livelihood among the rural households of the State. In addition to timber and fuel wood, a good number of Non Timber Forest Products are available in the forest of the State that are contributing in a big way towards livelihood improvement. It is stated that women are very active and they are socially and economically more empowered in Nagaland than some other parts of our country. In rural area, almost all the rural women work in "Jhum" field that is located in the jungle and they return with a variety of products from their own field as well as from the jungle. Thus both men and women work in "Jhum" field and in the evening they return with a basket of products collected from the different jungle areas. In addition to their products from "hum" cultivation they derive a significant portion of their menu from this basket of products. Hence, a systematic study on these products and its quantification as well as its contribution towards their daily livelihood management is an important subject in a State like Nagaland. | |||
Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | Rural tribal farmers dependent mostly on shifting cultivation and other forest products for livelihood. |
