Project Brief Description:

The project entitled, Availability, utilization and digital documentation of non timber forest product (NTFP) for sustainable rural livelihood creation and decision support system of the rural households in the northwest Himalayas will be carried out with the following objectives 1. To find out the availability status and use pattern of selected NTFP of the north west Himalayas
2. To delineate the factors impacting the dependence of households on the available NTFP for their livelihood
3. To generate digital database and mapping of NTFP in north west Himalayas
To accomplish the project following research methodology shall be followed:
Locale of the study
The study will be conducted in states of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Himachal Pradesh (H.P).

Sampling plan
A systematic multistage sampling technique shall be followed for drawl of ultimate sampling units. Since both the states are divided into different agro- ecological zones. From all the agro ecological- zones, a separate list of forest circles will be prepared where NTFP collection activities are being performed with the help of forest officers of the area. From each list, two forest circles shall be selected randomly without replacement. List of rural dwellers practicing NTFP collection activities from each selected circle shall be made. From each list of rural dwellers, practicing NTFP activities, a random sample of 100 rural dwellers shall be drawn randomly without replacement in final data collection.

Data collection
A semi- structured questionnaire will be developed for data collection. Content validity of the questionnaire will be determined by consulting the scientists from the discipline of forestry. The questionnaire will also be pre- tested with non- sampled NTFP collection rural dwellers for removing ambiguity if any and to find out its workability. Accordingly, based on pre- testing, the questionnaire will be finalized. A separate interview schedule will be developed. For focus group discussion to find out the history of NTFPs collection. Data will be collected by the SRFs under the guidance of PI and Co- PIs by personal interview method. A regression model will be developed to find out the factors compelling the dependence of households on NTFPs collections. A dashboard will be developed with analytical information for decision support system.

Digital documentation
For creation of online data base of resources of Himalayan region with reference to their importance and significance in terms of market demand an online data base will be created using PostgreSQL/ORACLE/MYSQL on Amazon web services. Each data entry in data base will be Geo- tagged using Googles Geo locator APIs so that an interactive map based resource information can be provided to the stake holders. A web based app and a mobile app for data entry in the data base will be provided. Another web based app and mobile based app will be created which will present a DASHBOARD with all analytical information for decision support system. Cloud based software will be developed which will be implemented on top of a data analysis algorithm and will act as analytical engine for data available in data base.

Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders:

The beneficiaries of the project are the rural dwellers living in and around the forest area and the policy makers
