| Project Brief Description: | Orchids, in the north east region, are a huge unexplored gold mine. Countries like Thailand and Holland have promoted and exploited fully the international hybrid orchid market perhaps by taking orchid genetic resources from India. The orchids that are available naturally in the Manipur hill area have extraordinary commercial ornamental, medicinal and religious values. Addressing the NMHS-BTG Conservation and Sustainable use of Biodiversity, this project focuses on community-managed conservation of unexplored medicinal orchids and thus training and capacity building in the target IHR State, i.e. Manipur. Standardized in situ and ex situ conservation techniques will not only evaluate the phytochemical contents but also ensure the sustainable use of the medicinal orchid species. Targeting 30 hill tribal community of Senapati district of Manipur, the project will explore new medicinal orchid in the region. For ex situ conservation, mini-orchidaria (10 polyhouses) are proposed in which they will maintain accessioning of about 100 endangered orchid species. Further, the project will standardize in vitro propagation protocols of about 30 medicinal orchid species and will produce five (5) lakh tissue culture plantlets of each plant species for commercial purposes with training to min. 1000 local people from all districts of Manipur, forming 40 Orchid Youth Brigades and thus commanding 15000 acres of land. | ||||
