| Project Brief Description: | The entire Himalayan region is vulnerable to disasters such as earthquakes, landslide, cloud burst, flood etc. Incidences such as disasters have increased the vulnerability of human population in past few years, may be due to impact of climate change. This project proposes to study in two north-eastern cities: Shillong and Gangtok with a view to develop their disaster resilience plans by highlighting exposure to potential risks and hazards using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The Community Centric Approach will also be adopted to achieve the proposed objectives of the project. Finally, major outputs will be: Strengthen the north-eastern cities towards climate and disaster risk reduction by better informing planning and policy decisions, Creation of local level risk-related data and knowledge hubs, Capacity building etc. Awareness and outreach programs along with capacity building will be provided to the local mountain communities for disaster risk reduction by imparting them the necessary knowledge and information through social networking and public participation in workshops. The project will also provide composite hazard and vulnerability maps at 1:4000 scale for Shillong and Gangtok cities. | ||||
| Beneficiaries/ Stakeholders: | • Local communities of Shillong and Gangtok. • Municipal corporations, development authorities, Department of environment and forest, pollution control boards, disaster management authorities, Infrastructure service agencies, water management authorities and planners.
